Air Film Technology – An Introduction to the Art of Moving Heavy Loads Virtually Friction Free
Air Film Technology
Although air film technology has been in use since the 1960's to move heavy objects, and has since been used in a diverse range of applications, it still remains very new to many industries. Not surprisingly, conventional methods of using wheels and rollers remain the first consideration by many when it comes to deciding how to move something heavy.
Rotair Systems, one of the world's leading suppliers of air film technology equipment, was formed in 2004. The Company now offers a vastly expanded range of solutions for moving almost any heavy or awkward load up to 600 tonnes. With a team of specialist Design and Project Engineers, full on-site engineering support, and an ever increasing investment in R & D, Rotair Systems, is now providing full turnkey solutions to an even broader range of industries, both in the UK and worldwide.
The concept of air film technology is relatively simple, but incredibly effective. Air bearings, constructed of a flexible diaphragm are supplied with compressed air generally at 6/7-bar pressure. By allowing the air to leak to atmosphere at a controlled rate, the air bearing can be made to 'float' a few microns clear of the floor. At this point the coefficient of friction is sufficiently reduced to allow the load to move virtually friction free. Typically a 50 tonne load can be moved by just 100 kgs of force.
Air bearings can be fitted to a variety of concepts, such as simple air skate systems to more intricate transporter platforms, and are now in regular use in industries which include aerospace, rail, nuclear, theatre and many other production applications.
Air powered drive motors are fitted to custom-built transporter platforms to control speed and direction, enabling heavy and sometimes fragile loads to be manoeuvred and positioned accurately and safely.
As more and more people discover the effectiveness of air film technology, and the quick return on their capital investment, the range of applications continues to grow. From delicate laboratory equipment to complete football pitches Rotair Systems can provide a solution.
